O was ready and waiting for me with two thumbs up O was ready and waiting for me with two thumbs up yesterday! 😂 He was so excited to show me his 12-bar blues, he dressed the part.

This is why my face hurts after a full day of online teaching! We have all done our best to make it as entertaining as possible - and we’ve been very successful . 🤍

Three years ago I was hanging with a pretty great crew ❤️🎶 Miss you three!
...for the record, NONE of these guys were taller ...for the record, NONE of these guys were taller than me when they started lessons... 🤣

Our Muncie-Area Play Off Recital was 👏🏻fantastic👏🏻 this morning, and I am exceptionally proud of all three of these gentlemen, who each gave personal-best performances and shined in their own unique ways!

Additional congratulations to Andrew for being selected to represent our area at the NFMC State Competition.

I will never stop being grateful for getting to witness the personal growth of my students. They never cease to delight and inspire me. 🎶
It’s the 88th day of the year... which means: Ha It’s the 88th day of the year... which means: Happy World Piano Day! 🎹

❤️A love letter to studio families❤️ Toda ❤️A love letter to studio families❤️

Today marks one full year since the studio moved exclusively online.

I will never be able to express how grateful I am for your continued trust over the last 365 days. The investment you’ve made to continue with music study while the world turned upside down will be something your children (and I!) remember for a lifetime.

I know the past year has felt overwhelming in every area of life. We’ve cursed spotty internet on many occasions. Attention spans have waxed and waned. Emotions have been all over the map. We’ve missed performing for one another.

But, all the while, lessons have brought smiles to our faces. Music has been made. Goals were set, met, and exceeded. We have laughed, and have borne witness to the power of music to soothe the angsty soul.

I like to think I helped my students feel connected to someone who cares about them deeply as human beings. Truly, they helped keep me going on MANY days when I didn’t think I could possibly get through an entire lesson block without disintegrating into a puddle of tears.

It’s been hard, but we’ve been together. It’s made all the difference in the world to me, and I hope you feel the same. 🤍

Michael and I will be forever grateful for your place in our lives. Happy onlineaversary, studio family! 😘

🤩 WPS Student Spotlight 🤩 How fantastic is 🤩 WPS Student Spotlight 🤩

How fantastic is it to be selected for the Judge’s Choice Recital at your very first Federation event? Just ask this guy!

I keep thinking about how important it is in life to show up and do challenging things, even if they rattle your nerves a bit.

I love how fearlessly this student entered into this experience. What a terrific reminder of the life lessons learned in music study. 💙
📣 WPS Student Shout-Out 📣 This hard worker 📣 WPS Student Shout-Out 📣

This hard worker is the first student I’ve had to earn TWO federation trophies in the same year. She earned superior scores in FIVE events, TWO trophies, and was selected to play in the Judge’s Choice afternoon recital.

I’d say she had a pretty good day. 🤩

I am so proud of all my students today - and every day! 💜

I don’t tend to feel affected by celebrity death I don’t tend to feel affected by celebrity deaths ... but my heart is mourning the loss of Nelita True to this earth.

Nelita was a “piano grandma”, of sorts, to me - having been the teacher of one of my most influential teachers, Tommy Otten.

I played Beethoven for her once in a masterclass when I was young. She was magical. We went out for Thai food afterwards and I drank up every word she said. A friend of mine looked at me afterwards and said, “This is a day we’ll tell our children about”. I laughed then, thinking it was a little dramatic, but what do you know... she was right.

I crossed paths with her many times since that masterclass at various conferences. Every time, I reverted to my teenage self and could barely speak a coherent sentence to her. I fangirled so hard. 🤣

I asked Nelita for this photo in 2008(ish) and it has hung in my studio ever since.

I’ve long referred to her as my “piano teaching super hero”. Her brilliance has influenced my own teaching so much.

I tell my own students about her every time we talk about short notes leading to long notes.

I admired everything about Nelita True as a teacher: her demeanor, her speech, her gift of explaining complex musical ideas so simply, her smile, her sophistication... I could go on and on.

As someone who treasures the legacy of music teachers as much as I do, I can’t help but feel particularly reflective on this brilliant life who held such profound influence on so many of us.

Cheers to you, Dr. Nelita True. Always my piano teaching superhero. ❤️
