I don’t tend to feel affected by celebrity death I don’t tend to feel affected by celebrity deaths ... but my heart is mourning the loss of Nelita True to this earth.

Nelita was a “piano grandma”, of sorts, to me - having been the teacher of one of my most influential teachers, Tommy Otten.

I played Beethoven for her once in a masterclass when I was young. She was magical. We went out for Thai food afterwards and I drank up every word she said. A friend of mine looked at me afterwards and said, “This is a day we’ll tell our children about”. I laughed then, thinking it was a little dramatic, but what do you know... she was right.

I crossed paths with her many times since that masterclass at various conferences. Every time, I reverted to my teenage self and could barely speak a coherent sentence to her. I fangirled so hard. 🤣

I asked Nelita for this photo in 2008(ish) and it has hung in my studio ever since.

I’ve long referred to her as my “piano teaching super hero”. Her brilliance has influenced my own teaching so much.

I tell my own students about her every time we talk about short notes leading to long notes.

I admired everything about Nelita True as a teacher: her demeanor, her speech, her gift of explaining complex musical ideas so simply, her smile, her sophistication... I could go on and on.

As someone who treasures the legacy of music teachers as much as I do, I can’t help but feel particularly reflective on this brilliant life who held such profound influence on so many of us.

Cheers to you, Dr. Nelita True. Always my piano teaching superhero. ❤️
