Intro to Piano Pedagogy: A Summer Study for High Schoolers (VIRTUAL OPTION)

I would love the opportunity to personally share my vision for this course with you, but the basics are as follows:

WHEN: To be determined

WHERE: Online, via Zoom (strong internet connection will be important)

WHO: This course is designed for pianists who play at an intermediate level (or above), and are entering grades 9-12. Participating students should be genuinely interested in teaching piano lessons and willing to participate in interactive exercises and discussions.

WHY: The art of teaching beginner piano skills requires more training than meets the eye. My goal is to empower young pianists, while helping them (and their potential students) avoid pitfalls that often come with “learning on the job” in this arena.

WHAT: Christina Whitlock, M.M, N.C.T.M., (click here to view bio) will mentor students through an exploration of materials available for piano teachers, as well as interactive lesson demonstrations, brainstorming sessions, and reflection activities designed to help students develop their own personal philosophy of teaching.

This course will include a personalized, custom workbook, which will serve as a resource students can reference throughout their teaching careers. Curriculum is designed as an age-appropriate introduction to the first semester course in Piano Pedagogy Christina teaches at Taylor University.

No specific assignments will be expected outside of class, but students will be provided with reflection exercises and opportunities for exploration throughout the week.

HOW MUCH? Early Bird registration for the full 6-week course is $375 (until May 1, 2022). This includes a collection of reference materials to be mailed to your home, as well as a custom workbook we will be completing throughout the course. After May 1st, tuition will raise to $450.

Students are strongly encouraged to discuss participation in this course with their current piano teacher.

Students who finish the course in good standing will receive a Certificate of Completion.

The course fee has been designed with the understanding students may miss a class or two due to summer travel plans. In the event you are unable to attend a class, you will receive a video recording of our class meeting, as well as the opportunity to ask questions about anything you missed.

Enrollment is incredibly limited, to preserve the quality of the intended mentoring relationship.
